Green Hills Public Schools – as a realtor, I get asked by a lot of parents about the quality of public schools. For this post I’m going to focus on Green Hills and as a comparison Brentwood public schools in Williamson county just a few miles south. The only way I can consistently measure school performance is by using the standard TCAP scores used by the state board of education. Any other way of measuring would be very inconsistent so I don’t even consider it.
The TCAP tests are taken every school year by every student, high schools use ACT scores, and you would think that the elementary schools that have great scores would in turn pass over to the high schools in the same neighborhood. Unfortunately that is not the case in Davidson county schools, since they want the diversify the schools, and the way they do that is bus children out of their neighborhood into a school across town that has students from many different areas. The end result is that they made every middle school and high school closer to average that the elementary schools. Magnet schools are the exception, but admission is not guaranteed, so be careful with you assumptions. Green Hills public schools are great at the elementary school level and just average at the middle school and high school levels.
Elementary school and middle schools use TCAP scores, high schools use ACT scores. These are from the 2015 school year. TO find homes zoned for the elementary school you like, just click on the school name.
- Percy Priest is ranked 8th in the state out of 853, and number one in Davidson county excluding magnet schools
- Julia Green is ranked 21st in the state out of 853 so they are really doing well
Middle Schools
- John T Moore is ranked 196th out of 494 middle schools in Tennessee, That’s middle of the pack across the state, and if your child attended Percy Priest or Julia Green they will probably be more advanced than most of the other students. At this point if you have a good student, you may be looking for alternative schools, if they can get in a magnet school, that’s great, if not you choices are private school or move to Williamson county where all of the middle schools are in the top 1% of state schools.
High Schools
- Hillsboro High school is ranked 273 out of 348, not even in the top half. Once again, all of the better students end up in Magnet schools, private schools, or move to Williamson county where all of the high schools are in the top 3% of state schools, including magnet schools.
