Tuesday afternoon, I came home after the first really warm day of the year and turned my HVAC system to cool for the first time in many months, and to my surprise, hot air came out. Within a few minutes, my house went from warm to hot. I couldn’t see anything wrong anywhere, so I shut it off until I could get someone out the next day. The guys at Tim Neal Heat and Air made it out on Wednesday afternoon, and when I told them what was happening, the checked immediately went to the low voltage wire from the thermostat to the system.
I have a picture of it, this wire should look like cord to a table lamp, but all the insulation is gone is some areas, and the bare wire is shorting out the thermostat, something had chewed all of the insulation of the wire for several feet. Thankfully it was a low voltage wire, instead of one that could cause a fire.
They suggested that since it was very close to the ground, it was probably a rabbit. I had to admit that I had seen rabbits squeeze under the unit, even though it’s only a few inches off the pad. Now after they have replaced the wire, I have to find a way to keep the rabbits from doing it again.
