Fairvue History
Fairvue was built by Isaac Franklin and was later owned by his widowed wife Adelcia Hayes along with several other plantations and the Belmont mansion that is now the site of Belmont university. After the civil was it was sold to Charles Reed, a New York horse breeder for $50,000. In 1908 the plantation was sold in tracts for $75,000 .
In 1929 Rogers Caldwell, Mason Houghland and John Branham formed the Sumner county land company and bought Fairvue with 632 acres for $74,000. The founders ripped out all the barber wire and installed miles of post and rail fences to facilitate fox hunting and steeplechasing. But the stock market crash later that year and the depression that followed ended the dreams to the the sportsmen and Fairvue fell into receivership in 1932.
In 1934 it was purchased by Will and Ellen Wemyss, and they restored and preserved the plantation home and grounds for more than 60 years. Will was one of the co-founders of General shoe company, now known as Genesco.
